Loving the Christmas Classics

I’m kinda partial to the old classics when it comes to Christmas music and Christmas movies. I love the jargon of the day, the clothes and the messages that the music and old flicks have. It’s a much simpler time and in the warp speed world we live in today, I think that is what I love the most about them.

One of my favourite Christmas songs is Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song”. The smoothness of his voice, the arrangement. He’s painting a picture of the magic of the season. My other favourite is “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby. When I hear this song, I ‘see’ ol’ Bing singing away with a Santa hat on. Maybe I love it so much because it reminds me of my grandparents, especially my grandmother who I used to sit and watch these old movies with when I was young.

My favourite Christmas movie, hands down, is “It’s A Wonderful Life”. The movie is already 70 years old but I think the message is timeless. We are all connected. We all have an impact on each other’s lives, whether we realize it or not. I’ve seen the movie dozens and dozens of times and I still cry every time. I could probably recite the movie word for word I know it so well.

For me, Christmas is about the love of our family and friends and that’s why these songs and movies resonate with me. I think we’ve lost the true magic of what the holidays are about. It’s not about all the running around we feel we need to do. To buy one more thing to gift away, to get one more thing to decorate the house. It’s about our time we spend with the people we love.

Sure, we want to show our love and appreciation by getting the perfect present. Especially for our kids. That’s part of the wonder and magic. It helps us to relive our own childhood holidays, through the eyes of our own children. But when it comes down to it, we could probably live without a lot of the ‘things’ that we pine for. What we really want is time and the opportunity to create memories. It’s the memories that will outlive the stuff. When you think about it, that’s the part that stands out most in my memories as a kid.

I’m looking forward to creating some beautiful memories this holiday and in 2017. Hope you are too.
