Respect and Courtesy – Where have they gone?

Sometimes I think the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

I don’t know if I’m getting more sensitive to things or becoming more cynical with age. I don’t have patience for a lot of things lately and, frankly, it seems to stem from what I see as a total lack of respect and common courtesy in the world.¬†Honestly, people just don’t have any common sense these days.

These are just some of the observations I’ve made recently.

  1. Sharing the sidewalk
After I get the kids off to school in the morning I’ll go for a walk around the neighbourhood. It’s a great way for me to start my day. Breathe a little fresh air, take some time to appreciate the moments and just prepare myself for the day ahead. I often run into a group of young kids being walked from the local daycare provider to school. There’s usually 5 – 7 kids and a grown up. Now I know it’s just me walking along. But when I see someone coming towards me I will move to the right of the sidewalk to make room for the other person or group to pass. Call me crazy but I think it’s courteous to share the ‘road’ so to speak. Do you think these kids move when they see me coming? NO. I don’t blame them – the grown up that’s with them should be telling them to walk single file when they see me coming. Instead I have to move out of their way and walk onto the grass as if I’m not even there. Is that too much to ask to move over half a step and share the sidewalk?

Huge pet peeve of mine. I get that people are wrapped up in their own thoughts or get distracted. But if you see me coming, hold the door open for me. Pay attention to the world around you.I’m sure that text your writing can wait half a second.

3. Merging into traffic
Holy pet peeve. When you see someone trying to merge onto the highway, don’t speed up, pass into the right lane and then try to get ahead of me when I’m merging. You know that traffic is coming. You’re going to cause an accident!!!

4. Riding my tail while I’m driving
I follow the flow of traffic. And yes, I drive in the left lane of the highway. When there’s a lot of volume, you’re not going to get there any faster when you’re on my tail. My favourite thing is watching you try to pass me and then get stuck behind someone slower. What goes around comes around I say.

5. Saying “please” and “thank you”

Need I say more?

What are some of your pet peeves?
